Antique photographs have always been a
central element in the work of the artist, but in addition to collecting and utilizing photography in his art, Smith has been an avid photographer himself. His most recent photographic project has taken him deep
into the rural south documenting Black communities and photographing decaying monuments of the Old South. An innovative aspect of this new work is his picture-in-picture series which was unveiled to public
acclaim at the Bridge Art Fair during last year’s Art Basel Art Fair in Miami. His photographs were the subject of his recent NYC one man show, “Playing God”, and was highlighted in the May 2007
issue of Arts & Antiques Magazine.
