boyd_bio“My artistic perspective is that of a Black American woman who came of age at the time of Malcolm’s speeches; of Martin’s sit-ins and freedom marches; when Black was beautiful and Soul was king. My mother, who grew up in the forties, was a social studies teacher in the Atlanta Public school system. She taught me that, the Equal Rights Amendment notwithstanding, in order to maintain my equality, I had to work twice as hard, for twice as long, all the while presenting a lady-like demeanor. She promised that if I were willing to do that, I could do anything I wanted and be anyone I wanted to be. Making art is my answer to that challenge. It is the finish line of the marathon, screaming into the face of the storm and looking down from the highest height. Art is a physical outlet for my fears and frustrations; a way to rage at injustice and greed; a melding of my mother’s righteous fears for her children and ….Through my art I express appreciation for those who have gone before me and my hope to leave footprints worth following.”
