Francks Décéus sells at Swann Galleries Auction

A 2007 work on paper from the Pilgrimage series by Francks Décéus sold at the recent Swann Galleries’ auction on Tuesday, February 19, 2008.  The auction organized by the new African-American Fine Art department of Swann Galleries was their third auction of African American Art. The sale offered 250 paintings, drawings, collages, prints and sculpture from notable collections and estates, and featured works by celebrated African American artists—from Henry Ossawa Tanner to Faith Ringgold. Francks Décéus was one of a handful of contemporary artists, and the youngest artist, to be included in the auction. The  work titled “One” sold at $3,800, $300 above the high range of the estimate of $3,500.

Mixed media on wove paper, 2007. 660x560 mm; 26 1/4x22 inches. Signed and dated in acrylic, left margin.

This Haitian-born Brooklyn painter and printmaker is a young artist already well-known for his graphic and colorful figurative depictions of African Americans. This recent work on paper shows the move toward spirituality and abstraction in his work, perhaps influenced by the work of Norman Lewis. In addition to many gallery exhibitions, his works were recently included in museum exhibitions at the MoCADA, Brooklyn, the Brooklyn Museum, and the National Civil Rights Museum, Memphis, TN. His work is also found in the collections of the Schomburg Center, New York, and Xavier University, New Orleans.

Francks Décéus wins Award at Hampton University Museum ‘New Power Generation’ Exhibition

Francks Décéus was the recipient of the Samella Lewis award for Painting at the Hampton University Museum’s ‘New Power Generation 2008’ exhibition at the University Museum on Feb. 8, 2008. The Exhibition, organized by the Hampton University Museum, “is a national competition for contemporary art by people of African descent. It is an opportunity for the museum to enhance its long-held reputation as a documenter of movements in the visual arts by focusing its attention on emerging and working artists who are creating new forms and charting new directions”. The exhibition features 23 artists and 42 works and runs until July 26, 2008.

Décéus gives views on Panel at National Black Fine Art Show 2008

Francks Décéus shared his views and insight as one of four panelists on Saturday’s Panel and Lecture Series “Exploring the New Wave of Contemporary Artists that are Breaking the Glass Ceiling” at the recent National Black Fine Art Show in New York City. Other artists on the panel were Mickalene Thomas, Alexis Peskine and Hank Willis Thomas. The artists discussed the complexities of navigating the contemporary art market and achieving recognition as Black artists.
