“Understanding my working
process informs in part how these layered landscapes come to be peopled with characters who seem incomplete – some are missing limbs or wear a single high heel of slave shackle. Snaggle-toothed, bug-eyed men run across or
leer out from their surroundings. Being conscious of unfairness and injustice, and the role of desire and guilt and an unresolved history in particular across racial lines, but also around sexual freedom is a place from which
my work emanates. Certain repeating images – exaggerated pink lips or nipples, tiny scribbled maps of the U.S., amorphous white houses or crosses on bloody foundations are charged symbols in my work.”
