John Holyfield

Born and raised in Clarksburg, West Virginia, John Holyfield was orphaned and reared by his grandmothers. Early in childhood, his interest in art was evident. Encouraged by teachers, family and friends, he studied art throughout school and went on to Howard University and the University of D.C. to major in graphic design. His interest, however, soon turned to fine art. Realizing the appeal of his works, he entered the fine art market and has carved a comfortable niche for his warm and positive images of African American life.

Holyfield’s work has a strong southern, folksy feel, faithfully capturing the positive aspects of rural Black life. He paints with the maturity of a much older artist, evoking imagery of an era past to convey a timeless message about the virtues and value of strong familiar bonds, religious principles, friendship, and fellowship.

For much of the subject matter he draws on family members, childhood memories and stories told to him by his grandmothers. He acknowledges his grandmothers as his greatest inspirations -- the reason women figure so prominently in his work. Having grown up a Baptist, his religious upbringing also finds expression in his frequent use of religious imagery and church scenes.

Holyfield’s artistic and stylistic influences include Ernie Barnes, Norman Rockwell, and Frederic Leighton.
