“My ideal world is one in which every moment is treasured. A hand on a hip, the bend of a smile, the organic perfection of a sunflower hiding in a little girl’s braid are proof that beauty lies in everything. No moment is ever too small to be celebrated. Lean in, look closely; the emotion and the magic of my pieces are in the details”.
-ARTIST STATEMENT Karen Powell is a trained graphic artist and painter. She studied at Fisk University and did graduate studies at the University of Chicago. After a thirty three year career creating corporate designs in Boston, the artist relocated to the Atlanta area and has turned full-time to creating fine art mixed media work. She works on canvas using vintage photographic images combined with acrylic painting, trying, she says, to capture the spirit of her subjects and celebrate their heritage. She describes her work as a series of “push and pulls”: the push of a vintage black and white photo with the pull of contemporary vibrant background colors; the push of blurred edges of the images which seem to emerge from their backgrounds, and, most of all, the push and pull of emotions. |
